About the event
Join our theatrical protest speaking out against the role that fossil fuel industry lobbyists in our town play in infiltrating Federal public policy making and undermining our democracy.
Some of the most influential industry lobbyists against climate action in Australia have offices here in Canberra, but you may not know of their existence. The Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) has helped secure Australia’s place as the world's third-largest exporter of fossil fuels and have primed Australia for a gas-fired recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gas is a disaster for the climate and ignores the abundant potential of renewables. The October Budget was a gas industry ‘wish-list’. This is #statecapture, as the gas industry has a lock on the opposition too.
As we mark the fifth anniversary of the 2015 Paris Agreement this month, Australia is not on track to meeting our international commitments, weak as they are. APPEA works to derail our international climate commitments.
Extinction Rebellion demands zero emissions by 2025 in line with climate science. We also demand that the Government create and be led by a Citizens’ Assembly on the climate and ecological emergency.
